Channeling consumption preferences for co-existence of landrace and modern varieties in-situ AgEcon
Krishna, Vijesh V.; Pascual, Unai; Zilberman, David.
The study examines the least-cost option of conserving landraces in-situ by the development of market friction instruments. The empirical examination is comprised of two closely-related studies on eggplant production and consumption sectors of India. An examination of the cost and return structure of eggplant farming in the study area reveals that the incremental farm price of eggplant products of landrace origin eclipses the yield advantage of hybrid varieties. Possibly due to the information asymmetries and other imperfections existing in this market, the price increment currently realized by the eggplant farmers is still only a fraction of consumers’ willingness to pay for landraces. This wide margin is indicative of the unexploited potential of...

Economic Comparisons of Alternative and Conventional Production Technologies for Eggplant in Southern Georgia AgEcon
Brunson, Kathryn E.; Stark, C. Robert, Jr.; Wetzstein, Michael E.; Phatak, Sharad C..
Environmental concerns about pesticide usage in traditional production systems are prompting vegetable producers to consider alternative systems. Research results from a multi-year study on eggplant in southern Georgia compare two alternative production technologies to the conventional rye cover crop technology. Alternative technologies utilize beneficial insect principles as substitutes for conventional pesticide controls. Using field data, eggplant production budgets are developed to generate net return estimates under each system. Cost reductions achieved by using alternative technologies are not sufficient to offset the reduced yields and returns generated from these technologies. Cash input requirements for alternative systems suggest potential for...

Effect of aubergine (Solanum melongena) on serum and hepatic cholesterol and triglycerides in rats BABT
Silva,Marcelo E; Santos,Rinaldo C; O'Leary,Maureen C; Santos,Ronald S.
The present work reports the effect of aubergine extract on serum and hepatic cholesterol and triglycerides levels in adult rats. Fisher rats were divided into three groups: the first one received a normolipidic diet and water , serving as a control; the other two received a hypercholesterolaemic diet with 30% vegetable oil and 1% cholesterol, one of these being given water while the other was given an aubergine extract. After 28 days the animals were sacrificed and serum and hepatic cholesterol and triglycerides levels were assessed. The obtained results indicated that under the experimental conditions employed, the aubergine extract increased serum and decreased hepatic cholesterol and had little or no effect on both serum and hepatic triglycerides.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena) infusion has a modest and transitory effect on hypercholesterolemic subjects BJMBR
Guimarães,P.R.; Galvão,A.M.P.; Batista,C.M.; Azevedo,G.S.; Oliveira,R.D.; Lamounier,R.P.; Freire,N.; Barros,A.M.D.; Sakurai,E.; Oliveira,J.P.; Vieira,E.C.; Alvarez-Leite,J.I..
Eggplant (Solanum melongena) is consumed extensively in Brazil. It has been believed that infusion of a powdered preparation of the fruit may reduce serum cholesterol. However, there are few documented reports on its effects on cholesterol metabolism and its possible hypocholesterolemic effect has not been proved by well-controlled studies. The aim of the present study was to observe the effects of S. melongena on the serum cholesterol and triglycerides of 38 hypercholesterolemic human volunteers ingesting S. melongena infusion for five weeks. Thirty-eight hypercholesterolemic subjects receiving either S. melongena infusion (N = 19) or placebo (N = 19) participated in two clinical experiments in which the effect of S. melongena infusion was studied with (N...

Çürük,Sebahattin; Dasgan,H. Yıldız; Mansuroğlu,Sedat; Kurt,Şener; Mazmanoğlu,Meltem; Antaklı,Özgür; Tarla,Gülcan.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of grafting (onto Solanum torvum Sw.) on plant growth, yield and fruit quality of the Pala and Faselis eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) cultivars, grown in a soil infested with Verticillium dahliae Kleb. and Meloidogyne incognita, or in noninfested soil. Soil infestation decreased yield, plant height, final above-ground biomass, and also reduced fruit mean weight and shoot dry weight depending on cultivar or grafting. Grafting decreased fruit oxalic acid and the soluble solid contents, and increased mean fruit weight, depending on cultivar and soil infestation. Grafting also reduced the negative effects of the pathogens on disease index, plant height and shoot dry weight. Cultivar Pala was more vigorous...

Nematicidal activity of leaf extracts from Lantana camara L. against Meloidogyne incognita (kofoid and white) chitwood and its use to manage roots infection of Solanum melongena L. BABT
Ahmad,Faheem; Rather,Mohmad Azhar; Siddiqui,Mansoor Ahmad.
Various concentrations of aqueous leaf extract of Lantana camara were assessed in vitro conditions against second stage juveniles (J2) of Meloidogyne incognita. The standard concentration 'S' of leaf extract was found to be highly nematostatic, where nematodes were completely paralyzed after 12 h and after 48 h of exposure, 96% of juveniles were killed at same concentration. However, the mortality of juveniles was 75% in S/2 dilution at 48 h. The degree of effectiveness and dilutions of extract were directly proportional. The percentage of paralyzed juveniles was decreased, when J2 transferred in distilled water after 48 h incubation in standard aqueous leaf extract. Addition of freeze-dried aqueous extract to sterile sandy substrate at S/2 dilution...

Restoring pollen fertility in transgenic male-sterile eggplant by Cre/loxp-mediated site-specific recombination system Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cao,Bihao; Huang,Zhiyin; Chen,Guoju; Lei,Jianjun.
This study was designed to control plant fertility by cell lethal gene Barnase expressing at specific developmental stage and in specific tissue of male organ under the control of Cre/loxP system, for heterosis breeding, producing hybrid seed of eggplant. The Barnase-coding region was flanked by loxP recognition sites for Cre-recombinase. The eggplant inbred/pure line ('E-38') was transformed with Cre gene and the inbred/pure line ('E-8') was transformed with the Barnase gene situated between loxp. The experiments were done separately, by means of Agrobacterium co-culture. Four T0-plants with the Barnase gene were obtained, all proved to be male-sterile and incapable of producing viable pollen. Flowers stamens were shorter, but the vegetative phenotype was...

Abstract This research evaluated the stability of non-encapsulated and spray-dried encapsulated anthocyanin from Solanum melongena L. bark as a natural dye in yogurts. Anthocyanin was extracted using 70% cereal alcohol acidified with citric acid at pH 2.0. Extract spray-drying was defined using the experimental design (22), with drying temperature (°C) and carrier concentration (Gum arabic) as independent variables. The response variable adopted was the total monomeric anthocyanin content. The following analyses were performed: color; total monomeric anthocyanins; total phenolic contents; antioxidant activity using the DPPH• (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical; pH; and acidity. Yogurt degradation constant, half-life, and color retention percentage of...

THE IMPACT OF THE PHASE OUT OF METHYLBROMIDE ON THE U.S. VEGETABLE INDUSTRY AgEcon
VanSickle, John J.; Nalampang, Sikavas.
Methyl bromide is a critical soil fumigant used in the production of several fresh fruit and vegetables grown in the U.S. The U.S. Clean Air Act of 1992, as amended in 1998, requires that methyl bromide be phased out of use by 2005. A mathematical programming model of the North American vegetable market indicates that the elimination of methyl bromide will have significant impacts on U.S. growers of fruit and vegetables that rely on methyl bromide for soil fumigation purposes. The schedule for eliminating methyl bromide has resulted in a 50% decline in methyl bromide availability and has resulted in significant increases in the price of methyl bromide. The vegetable industry has not felt the impact that the reduction in methyl bromide may have, however, as...
